Suburb of invesigation: Moorebank, NSW (indicated on the map above as 'A')
Aim: To investigate the potential impacts of the Moorebank intermodal on its surrounding local communities. Overview: We have decided to investigate a controversial development scheme that will potentially make socio-economic impact on the residents in the vicinity of the Liverpool/ Moorebank area. The Liverpool City Council plans to place an intermodal terminal situated on a 220 hectare site near Anzac Road, Moorebank Avenue, Wattle Grove and the Airport and East Hills Railway line (see map above) to provide rail port shuttle between Port Botany and the south west of Sydney. The site is currently occupied by the Department of Defence including the School of Military Engineering (SME) to the west of Moorebank Avenue; while relocating the current organisation. The intermodal will consist of warehouses for freight and a separate terminal for interstate freight. Although the Australian government has stated the projects have many benefits, several issues of striking concern have developed since the establishment of the proposal. Problems include traffic congestion and traffic delays, noise pollution, light spill, and reduced property values. Environmentally related issues such as the removal of trees and threatened species and their habitats are also major problems which have been raised. The impacts of the intermodal project, both positive and negative, will be discussed throughout the website. Due to the plan’s large variety of potential impacts and affects as well as it being planned on a large scale, the scheme has developed countless controversial opinion and criticism. It has also raised doubts aboout the real merits of the projects location on the proposed site.it. As it will affect the local community, which us as citizens reside within, it has raised exceptional concern among the members of the group, mainly regarding its potential negative impacts. |
